Evander Holyfield Licensed to Fight

holyfieldYou read that right.  The Nevada State Athletic Commission, in all its infinite wisdom, granted a one fight license to the 47 year old Evander Holyfield.  Holyfield has not stepped in the ring since his last bout in 2008 when he lost to Nikolay Valuev.  The one fight license was granted to Holyfield on the condition that he get a retinal inspection before the fight with one board member voting against the license because of his concern for Holyfield’s health.  I think he may need more than a retinal inspection.  He is 47 years old.  Now, I realize that he was/is an athlete and that he is leaps and bounds ahead of most average 47 year old males, but why step in the ring after years of getting your brains beat in?  What are you proving?

This fight will receive some hype but as soon as it is over it will be an afterthought that few will remember, even the participants.  His opponent will be Frans “White Buffalo” Botha, the current WBF World Heavyweight Champion.  This will not be a title fight for Holyfield but more of a fight that he hopes (with a W) will catapult him into the conversation of title contention.  The fight is tentatively scheduled for April 17th at The Orleans Arena at The Orleans Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.  If the tickets are cheap enough, it might not be a bad show to attend.  The seating in the arena is very close to the action as there is not a bad seat in the house.
